Salvation Army officials in Memphis hope a new $33 million suburban rehabilitation center will help more individuals in need of assistance. The Commercial Appeal reports the Salvation Army will close its downtown facilities because of the newly opened Adult Rehabilitation Center. The nonprofit has operated downtown for 50 years.

University of Connecticut leaders have scrapped a proposal to merge the UConn Health Center with Hartford Hospital , determining that the latest plan for the health center's future could not win enough support to succeed. That leaves university leaders in a familiar position, grappling with the future of a hospital they consider too small and outdated to be economically viable and searching for a plan acceptable to state lawmakers, who must approve any proposal. Two local nonprofit agencies are teaming up. The Center for Individual and Family Services and the Rehab Center of North Central Ohio announced Friday they will integrate services, effective Jan. 1. "Our goal is to responsibly work together to provide the maximum amount of quality services with the limited resources available," Chuck Cook, chairman of the Center's board, said Friday.

A new Oxfordshire cancer unit has opened its doors to the public to help demystify the disease and the treatments patients receive. Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals and the University of Oxford are holding a joint public open day at the Churchill Hospital cancer centre in Oxford. On Saturday doors will be open to back-room areas normally closed to the public, including operating theatres.

Literally. Hospital leaders, contractors and employees gathered on top of the new East Parking Garage on Friday morning and sent a volley of footballs flying to mark the official start of the project. When completed, the hospital will have 50 percent more space and 34 additional patient beds, along with a host of other improvements.

Officials from the Syracuse Veterans Administration Medical Center tried Friday morning to quell fear about a possible gap in health care for north country veterans, and faced a range of other concerns over plans for a contract for operation of the Jefferson County outpatient VA clinic to change hands. Carthage Area Hospital revealed earlier this week that the VA clinic it currently operates will close Nov. 30, to be replaced by a clinic in Watertown that will be opened Feb. 15 by Valor Healthcare Inc. V

A nurse's simple but bright idea to set up a hospital clothes bank has been picked up at home and abroad. It also earned Billi Hamnett, who works at Leicester Royal Infirmary, a place on the short-list for a national award. The deputy sister established the clothes bank in the hospital's emergency department so patients whose clothes had been ruined in accidents would have something to go home in.
